Problem Statement

The OEM's Type C Dual Bellow Mechanical Seal, featuring a Dual Unpressurized Face to Back Cartridge configuration and Rotary Bellow IB - Material Alloy 718+TC, failed prematurely after just three months of operation, far shorter than the anticipated service life.

Cause of Thermal Checking:

Excessive throat bushing clearance Reduced the Differential Pressure between the pump discharge and stuffing box, lowering the flush fluid flow from the heat exchanger.

This led to inadequate liquid film formation, increasing Frictional Heating and Thermal Fatigue, Causing Damage to the seal bellows’ faces and ultimately leading to the failure of the Type C Inconel Metal Bellow seal.

Solution Implemented

  • Reconditioned Mechanical Seal with Newly Assembled Alloy 718 Rotary Bellows. Additionally, the Throat Bushing was Redesigned and Optimized based on Precise Clearance Analysis for Optimal Performance, ensuring the Maintenance of Differential Pressure
and Fluid Flow Integrity between the Seal Face Pair.
  • High-Temperature Steam Cleaning of the Plan 21 Heat Exchanger was performed to Remove Fouling and Restore Thermal Conductivity, followed by a Pressure Test for the Heat Exchanger. This process provides Optimized Heat Transfer Efficiency for Improved Thermal Performance.

The Dual Bellow Mechanical Seal was successfully refurbished. Our Fluid & Gas Sealing Team from Installed Base Management (IBM) conducted a 5-point Equipment Integrity Check, followed by Mechanical Seal Installation, Testing, and Startup at the plant to ensure continued Reliability for our clients. Both the Refurbishment and Installation were completed within 48 hours of receiving the seal. Since then, the seal has been operating at peak efficiency for over 12 months, demonstrating exceptional reliability and performance.

TESCO Engineering’s IBM team continues to monitor its performance closely, providing reports to the client as part of the Preventive Maintenance Plan.
